Given the right circumstances you can really improve the migration speed
Most of the time we migrate a users entire mail file in one fell swoop. This is because we are staggering the migrations over a period of time. So we will have some users continuing to use Notes mail while we have some users that are already migrated to Exchange/Office 365. . When a Notes user emails a user who is already migrated Domino forwards the mail to the Exchange server. We have our Notes users listed as Contacts in AD/Exchange. When an Exchange user emails a Notes user he is found as a contact and forwards the mail to the Domino server.

First step we take is converting a Contact to a Mail Enabled user. We creating a mail box for this user. The migration software will read from the Notes mail file and write to the newly created Exchange mail box. If we create the mail box too far ahead of time, then mail from Notes users will be delivered to the Notes mail file on Domino. Mail from Exchange users will be delivered to the newly created mail box. Now our user's mail is being delivered to different locations. It is a fun dance that we do prior to actually migrating the mail.

Recently, I completed a mail migration for a logistics company in North Carolina, in the United States. They were only migrating 125 users. It was decided to do a Big Bang migration. All users would continue to use Notes until Friday evening and then Monday morning everyone would start using Outlook/Exchange. This eliminated the Exchange users sending to Notes users when the mail boxes already existed. A week before we began filtered migrations.

This pre-migration took 72 hours. If this had been a full migration users mail migrations would have finished Monday afternoon.

The following Friday we flipped the switch and verified that all mail was being delivered to Exchange. The we started the migrations using the Post Sept 28

The Migration Workers first filtered all mail received prior to September 28 and only migrated new mail. The migration completed in 4 hours. Migrations were complete before midnight.

Author's Background
I am a Notes/Consultant with twenty-seven years of experience (almost exclusively with Lotus Notes / Domino). My experience with Notes began when I worked as a Senior Computer Consultant for Price Waterhouse. In 1993, I went to work for Lotus Development Corporation as a Senior Notes / Domino Instructor. I started teaching Application Development and System Administration with Version 3. Helped to develop the course materials for Version 4.x and Release 5.x When LotusScript, Javascript and Java were added to Notes/Domino I started teaching these programming languages.

In 1995, IBM acquired Lotus. For several years we were left alone and the culture did not change. It was a lot of fun to work for Lotus. In 1999 the handwriting was on the wall and I decided it was time for me to leave. So I established V&M to do Lotus Notes/Domino Application Development, System Administration and Training. I've been at it ever since. The life of the consultant is constantly changing. It has given me the chance to travel across Canada and the United States, Scotland, England, Bermuda, Jamaica, Barbados and Hawaii. No travel to the Far East yet. Anyone?

For the last seven years I have been helping companies move their data from Lotus Notes to the Microsoft platform.
