Redirecting Mail Migration Traffic
While working on a client they had a request that I had never come up against. They have a local connection from the Domino servers and CMTe Migrations Workstations. Unfortunately it is limited to 10 MB and they have completely flooded the pipe in the past. We could wait for the 100 MB which is coming in the future but I wanted to at least migrate our pilot group. They have available 50 MB connection to the Internet and there is no business critical traffic on that link.

Confirm the Configuration
Just to make sure that we had the basic configuration correct, I migrated one user's mail file to On Premise Exchange 2013. I completed this outside of business hours. So it worked smoothly and now the next step was to redirect the migration traffic.

Hosts file
So now I edited the hosts file on my Migration Workstations to point to the Internet Addresses of the Exchange Server.
# Added by JV - to redirect to the internet
Then I started the migrations. No luck. After much banging my head against the wall and posting to the migration forums on LinkedIn. I put this option on the back burner and figured that we'd have to wait for the 100 MB connection.

Light Bulb Turns On
While working with Binary Tree Support on another issue, my support guy pointed me to a support document entitled CMTe: Migration to Office 365 Fails to Initialize over MAPI/HTTP connection I didn't pay much attention to the tech note because we were migrating to Exchange 2013 On-Premise. Binary Tree Tech Support helped me resolve my other client's problem. This tech note took my redirecting mail migration traffic off the back burner. The solution is to revert to an older version of Outlook or make a Registry change. I choose the Registry change. So I disable MAPI/HTTP and Outlook reverts to RPC/HTTP.

So on an earlier version of Outlook just modifying the hosts file would have worked. However since we were using a current version of Outlook I needed to make the registry change.

Author's Background
I am a Notes/Consultant with twenty-seven years of experience (almost exclusively with Lotus Notes / Domino). My experience with Notes began when I worked as a Senior Computer Consultant for Price Waterhouse. In 1993, I went to work for Lotus Development Corporation as a Senior Notes / Domino Instructor. I started teaching Application Development and System Administration with Version 3. Helped to develop the course materials for Version 4.x and Release 5.x When LotusScript, Javascript and Java were added to Notes/Domino I started teaching these programming languages.

In 1995, IBM acquired Lotus. For several years we were left alone and the culture did not change. It was a lot of fun to work for Lotus. In 1999 the handwriting was on the wall and I decided it was time for me to leave. So I established V&M to do Lotus Notes/Domino Application Development, System Administration and Training. I've been at it ever since. The life of the consultant is constantly changing. It has given me the chance to travel across Canada and the United States, Scotland, England, Bermuda, Jamaica, Barbados and Hawaii. No travel to the Far East yet. Anyone?

For the last seven years I have been helping companies move their data from Lotus Notes to the Microsoft platform.
