Migrating Notes NSFs without a Domino server

In a month I am going to have to pull 350 mail files into Binary Tree's CMTe. I have downloaded the File Import Tool from the Binary Tree site. If you search the Binary Tree Support knowledge base for "CMTe: How to easily migrate a stand alone NSF File to PST file" you will find the database and instructions.

The way the BT tools is designed, you select one NSF and it is pulled into the User Import Tool . Each time the file path starts at the Notes data directory. So for each file I would have to navigate the directory structure. If I just pulled in a file from Archive2, there is a reasonably good chance that I might want to pull the next file from the same subdirectory.

While I was tweaking the code, I figured that it would be easy to handle the selection of multiple files. So I created "JV's Select Multiple Files".

The first thing that we need to do is to get the NSFs loaded into the Migration Control Centre.

Launch Notes and open the following database/application

Your mileage my vary the location and the filename

Pretty simple. One view
Click on the JV’s Select Multiple Files button

You will be prompted for a Description

This will be used to create a new category. In the screen shot above you can see the category created by this selection.

The File Selector dialog will open in the Notes data directory.
The next time you run this agent the last directory that you looked at will be displayed.

Select the files you would like to import – Click then Shift Click or Control Click

You will see a message like the one above. Click Yes

Say Yes to the next user.

After the last user in your selection you will see the following

We can continue to select NSFs. If you answer “Yes” - you will be prompted for a new Category and you can move to a different directory to import the files.

When you are done select “No”

From here on I deviate from the Binary Tree proceedure. I have a copy of the Domino Directory from the customer and I want to use it to build the Address Translation Table. So I want to copy the entries from the File Import Tool into the Domino Directory and then import them into CMTe.

Select the files that you want to import and copy them to the clipboard

Now paste them into the Directory

Import files into CMTe

Now we click the button

Select the file that we want and click OK

Now just run this as a regular migration.

Author's Background
I am a Notes/Consultant with twenty-seven years of experience (almost exclusively with Lotus Notes / Domino). My experience with Notes began when I worked as a Senior Computer Consultant for Price Waterhouse. In 1993, I went to work for Lotus Development Corporation as a Senior Notes / Domino Instructor. I started teaching Application Development and System Administration with Version 3. Helped to develop the course materials for Version 4.x and Release 5.x When LotusScript, Javascript and Java were added to Notes/Domino I started teaching these programming languages.

In 1995, IBM acquired Lotus. For several years we were left alone and the culture did not change. It was a lot of fun to work for Lotus. In 1999 the handwriting was on the wall and I decided it was time for me to leave. So I established V&M to do Lotus Notes/Domino Application Development, System Administration and Training. I've been at it ever since. The life of the consultant is constantly changing. It has given me the chance to travel across Canada and the United States, Scotland, England, Bermuda, Jamaica, Barbados and Hawaii. No travel to the Far East yet. Anyone?

For the last seven years I have been helping companies move their data from Lotus Notes to the Microsoft platform.
